Applicability of various empirical and semi-empirical rules to predict the refractive index of binary organic liquid mixtures is examined using eight empirical and semi-empirical rules and their relative applicability. Various binary mixtures are chosen with a view to provide a large background of diversified experimental data. It has been found that any single formula is not applicable with same accuracy for every mixture and applicability varies according to the degree of molecular interaction taking place in the mixture.
